Former England striker Chris Sutton has delivered a cutting takedown of Everton under Marco Silva, insisting the Toffees’ latest performance against Norwich City was ‘desperate stuff’.
Everton were beaten 2-0 at home by the Premier League’s bottom club in a shock result, which has left the Portuguese on the brink at Goodison Park.
The club are just four points above the relegation zone in 15th, and it’s now six defeats in nine with just one clean sheet coming in their last 11.
It would appear the vast majority of fans are now calling for change, and Sutton can understand the pleas.
He said (BBC Sport): “Silva was brought in to take Everton to the next level, a European place. There has been no improvement under him.
“He has had a lot of money to spend but it’s been like running in quicksand. It’s not going to get any better. The one thing he can’t complain about is he’s had the money to spend, he’s brought players in and he’s had time to mould his side.
“It’s the manner of the loss at the weekend. It was Sam Allardyce football – desperate stuff. I can understand the Everton fans who are saying we have had enough and if you carry on we could really be in a relegation scrap.”
TBR’s view – Dead man walking
It seems a question of when not if Silva will be sacked by Everton.
When one takes a look at Everton’s next few games (Leicester City, Liverpool, Chelsea Manchester United, Leicester in the FA Cup and Arsenal), it is very difficult to see him remaining in charge for much longer.
Sutton is right – there hasn’t been any improvements under him which is massively concerning given the signings he made in the summer.
