Chris Sutton criticism of Alex McLeish could be down to translation mix-up

Chris Sutton has hit back at comments from former Scotland and Rangers manager Alex McLeish regarding Kieran Tierney’s future at Celtic.

Tierney is being heavily linked with a move away from Glasgow this summer. As reported by The Mirror, Arsenal and Napoli are battling to secure the signature of the Scotland international.

The report suggests Celtic value Tierney at over £25 million.

McLeish certainly thinks Tierney should make the move. Speaking to Radio Marte, the Daily Record quote McLeish as stating the full-back is ready for ‘a more important club’ than Celtic.

It led Sutton, a former Celtic striker and avid fan of the Bhoys, to criticise McLeish on Twitter.

On the one hand, Sutton is right. There is no doubt that Celtic are just as ‘important’ a club as Napoli or Arsenal.

However, it seems things might have been lost in translation.

Remember, McLeish was talking to an Italian radio station and other outlets have quoted him differently. For instance, Football Scotland quotes McLeish differently. They state that the 60-year-old said the Celtic player was ready to take a ‘big step’ and play at ‘a higher level’ club than Celtic.

Not even the most avid Celtic fan would argue that the Scottish Premiership is on par with Serie A or the Premier League.

Wires appear to be crossed here. As far as Celtic fans are concerned, they will just hope Tierney stays regardless.
