Chris Sutton has told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club that he believes Leeds United deserve to gain promotion to the Premier League, amid the current suspension of both England’s top flight and The Football League until April 3.

Leeds currently sit top of the Championship pile with nine league games to play. One point above second-placed West Brom, Leeds are seven clear of third-placed Fulham and were closing in on ending their 16-year wait for Premier League football.

But the Covid-19 outbreak has put a stop to that, with doubts over whether the season will finish. There are a number of solutions to the current issue being spoken about in the media, with some suggesting Leeds may have to do it all over again.

Sutton, who is renowned for his outspoken views, told the Monday Night Club that he believes Leeds deserve to gain promotion to the top flight – but was of course, only speaking hypothetically.

“I understand clubs will always look out for themselves,” Sutton said. “The issue is money, if there was no money everyone would accept Liverpool are champions and Norwich, Villa and Bournemouth would be unhappy but would accept relegation.

“The fact of the matter is there is so much money involved which is why there will be these legal ramblings. Leeds deserve to come up. I know they have to get over the line but who knows where we are going to go with this.”

The suspension of the Championship, among other divisions, has seen Leeds’ matches with Fulham and Luton Town cancelled. The overriding feeling is that more matches will be postponed or even cancelled, beyond April 3.

It remains to be seen what decision is taken – whether Euro 2020 is cancelled, if the games will be played behind closed doors or even if the season finishes now, or is completely voided.
