Chris Sutton was left wowed by Gabriel Magalhaes’ goal last night for Arsenal during their win over Greek club Olympiacos in the Europa League.

The Gunners secured a 3-1 away win on Thursday night in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie.

Mikel Arteta’s side will host Olympiacos next week at the Emirates Stadium with a strong aggregate lead, which is made even greater by the fact they have three away goals.

Martin Odegaard opened the scoring with a thunderous left-footed rocket from outside the box, before more defensive mistakes in playing out from the back gifted Olympiacos a route back into the game with Youssef El-Arabi’s goal to make it 1-1.

Fortunately, the visitors scored two late goals to seize control of the tie.

Gabriel leaped highest in the 79th minute to scored a superb header from a Willian corner, while teammate Mohamed Elneny added a third with his strike from outside the box.

Pundit Sutton was left raving about the header from 23-year-old defender Gabriel.

“This is a stunning header from Gabriel. The timing of his leap and the direction. That’s the only place he can score,” Sutton told BT Sport 2 (11:35pm, 11 March).

“He gets up so well, and the control on that, back across the goal that’s a textbook header. There is not great pace on the ball that’s the only place he can score.”

TBR’s View:

All three of Arsenal’s goals last night were top class, especially Odegaard’s first Arsenal goal.

Gabriel returned to the Gunners starting XI for the midweek European tie and was certainly one of the star men on the field for the visitors.

The Brazilian centre-half contributed going forward with a goal and assist, plus it looked like played with real passion and desire.

He’s recently lost his regular starting position in the Arsenal team, but he sent out a message to manager Arteta with his latest display, and the summer signing has the qualities to force his way back into the XI.
