Chris Basham sends cheeky message to Leeds in promotion race

Sheffield United defender Chris Basham has been quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post as saying that he enjoyed Leeds United’s defeat to QPR – and reckons the Blades have what it takes to overtake the Whites.

Leeds’ excellent 4-0 win over West Bromwich Albion last Friday sees them sit in second place. Marcelo Bielsa’s side sit in second place in the Championship, while Norwich City are top with two points the difference.

Back down in third are Basham’s Sheffield United, who failed to retain their place in the top two on Monday night. They drew 0-0 with Steve Bruce’s Sheffield Wednesday in the Steel City derby.

Basham was asked about Sheffield United’s promotion chances and he is confident his side can see off Leeds to sit in the top two. Ahead of next week’s clash between the two sides, he poked fun at the 1-0 loss to QPR.

“No-one is going to win every game. If they do, fair play to them, they deserve to go up, but I don’t think everyone will. We’ve still got to go to Leeds yet and, hopefully, we can go there and beat them,” Basham said.

“We were all happy with the QPR result. It’s just the way the games are going. We’re in a good position for this group of players and the budget we’ve got and every player is an outstanding one. That’s why they’ve mucked in so well.”

TBR’s view

Leeds have been somewhat inconsistent over the past couple of months. But you get the feeling after the 4-0 win over West Brom – a third league win in four – that it is their’s to lose.

Sheffield United have also been in excellent form but after slipping out of the top two, they have to work even hard to get back in. A couple of banana skins await in Rotherham and Brentford before the Leeds clash.

But with 11 to play and Leeds sitting two points ahead and only two behind Norwich, they are in a strong position.
