How Chelsea’s players rated in Community Shield shoot-out defeat to Arsenal

Chelsea suffered humiliation at the hands of Arsenal for the second time in three months as they lost to the Gunners on penalties in the Community Sheild. Whilst their display was acceptable, and perhaps would have been enough had Pedro not been sent off, Thibaut Courtois’ penalty calamity embarrassed his side.

Victor Moses had given his side the lead, with a superb run rewarded by a looping header from Gary Cahill which put him in the ideal position to poke past Petr Cech.

However, the red card to Pedro late on in the tie gave Arsenal a chance, and Sead Kolasinac drew them straight back into the game. The full-back scored with a powerful header directly from the free-kick conceded by the Spaniard.

Thibaut Courtois and debutant Alvaro Morata were the ones to consign the Blues to defeat though with woeful shoot-out misses, Courtois firing high and Morata wide. That gave Olivier Giroud the chance to seal the win.

Here are how the Blues rated:

Thibaut Courtois – 6

Did brilliantly to deny Mohammed Elneny from scoring from the strangest of angles, and then denied Granit Xhaka with an equally as spectacular stop. Nothing he could have done to deny Kolasinac. Made to look foolish with his penalty shoot-out effort.
