'Chelsea regret...': Fabrizio Romano says Manchester City beat Blues to a key transfer this summer

Everyone is rightly raving about Erling Haaland at Manchester City this season but things might have been different had Chelsea got their wish.

The Norwegian superstar has made an outstanding start to life as a City player and capped it off this week with the inevitable winning goal against his former club, Borussia Dortmund. Haaland is already into double figures and with that, City have become the envy of all the rest of the PL.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, things might have been slightly different for Haaland had Chelsea managed to get taken over by Todd Boehly a little bit earlier. Speaking about Haaland on his YouTube channel today, Romano says that the Blues had hoped to be right in the mix to sign Haaland, but missed out due to their circumstances.

“There is one club that has the regret for the Erling Haaland and this club is Chelsea. One year ago when Roman Abramovich, Petr Cech, Marina Granovskaia were in charge of Chelsea, they tried to sign Erling Haaland before jumping into the Romelu Lukaku opportunity. But it was impossible because Dortmund said no way,” Romano said.

“But, what’s the point with Chelsea? The real regret is with the new owners. Todd Boehly was not in charge was Haaland was sold to Manchester City. The agreement was almost ready end of April, Chelsea were in a difficult period with sanctions, owners around the club. So, Chelsea missed the opportunity. Chelsea regret is that Todd Boehly wanted to jump in for the signing, but the timing made it impossible.”

TBR’s View: Haaland Was Always Going To City

Chelsea and Boehly might have fancied getting their hands on Haaland but in reality, he was always going to end up at Man City.

He has ties to the club from being a kid and with his Dad, and there was just an overriding feeling that Haaland was always going to end up in City blue.

Chelsea will obviously spend big under Boehly, but they might be waiting a long long time to get Erling Haaland.
