Report: Conte wanted £60m superstar at Spurs but he could now be set for Chelsea

Tottenham wanted to sign Italian midfield star Nicolo Barella this summer, but he could now end up at Chelsea instead.

According to reports from Calciomercato, Barella features high on the list of potential signings for new Chelsea boss Graham Potter. The new Chelsea manager is expected to be given backing to build his own team by Todd Boehly, with the club having already spent more than £200m backing Thomas Tuchel this summer.

Barella, who has attracted admiring glances from both Spurs and Liverpool, was said to be one of the main players Antonio Conte had suggested to the Tottenham recruitment team when he arrived. But with Spurs having already spent a fortune this summer, it remains to be seen whether they can go again in January.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will have no gripes in spending big when the January window rolls around. And even if they miss out then, the summer will soon come again for the Blues. Calciomercato claims that Inter value Barella at at least the £60m mark.

Whether or not Barella is open to moving to England remains to be seen. He is expected to feature tonight when the Azzurri face the Three Lions. Chelsea fans, then, will have a keen eye on proceedings.

TBR’s View: Barella A Fine Chelsea Addition

Well, he’s a fine addition for any team, let’s be right on that. Barella is a midfielder of the very highest qualities and he’d be superb for both Chelsea and Tottenham.

It’s clear as day that Chelsea will back Potter. They wouldn’t be moving on from Tuchel without a plan in place and they’ll need to give the new manager the right players.

Barella ticks so many boxes that he is really a no-brainer signing. If he performs well for Italy tonight, we can expect Blues fans to get excited.
