Chelsea transfer: Blues rival Aston Villa for free-agent goalkeeper
Aston Villa and Chelsea are eyeing a move for goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. The goalkeeper is a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
Now, according to the Daily Mail, via Birmingham Live, the stopper is in the sights of three Premier League clubs, with Burnley the other interested party.
Hennessey is an experienced performer and at 34 he’d make for a reliable backup goalkeeper to the trio of top-flight sides.
The 2020/21 campaign proved frustrating for Hennessey. He made just one first-team appearance and that came in a League Cup defeat to Bournemouth.
He was often not even included in the matchday squad and as a result, it came as little surprise when he was released.
Hennessey has played 181 games in the Premier League though and is a safe pair of hands. The Wales international also has 93 second-tier appearances to his name too.
Villa are in the market for a new goalkeeper. Emil Martinez is the number one custodian, although Tom Heaton has left to re-join Manchester United.
At Chelsea, he’d perhaps find himself further down the pecking order. Edouard Mendy is the first choice, with Kepa Arrizabalaga in reserve.
Hennessey would, however, boost the homegrown quota of players at all three clubs.
Chelsea and Aston Villa in for Hennessey: Strange signing for both clubs
This literally looks like the sort of deal that will be done just to aid with the homegrown quota in the squad.
Hennessey is some way short of the required quality to play for Aston Villa or Chelsea and it’s unlikely he will play much.
Both clubs have decent young goalkeepers and even getting game time in the Premier League 2 campaign looks out of the question.
Hennessey has plenty of Premier League experience but he’s unlikely to play much if he does complete one of these surprise moves.
