Chelsea Summer 2013 Transfer Targets Episode 1
Chelsea’s fans have been made to suffer this season. The departure of Roberto Di Matteo alongside an early European exit and lack of league form have accounted for an extremely poor campaign.
Current interim boss, Rafa Benitez, has struggled to inspire the team and as a result Chelsea have only the Europa League and FA Cup left to play for.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if we witnessed another huge overhaul at Stamford Bridge this summer. After an unsuccessful season, Roman Abramovich will not hold back when making changes to both the back room and playing staff at the club.
Here’s a look at the players who have been linked with a move to Chelsea in the next transfer window.
Chelsea have already signed 17-year-old Chilean Cristian Cuevas from O’Higgins in the summer.
The promising midfielder last week held talks with the London club and will join after the U20 World Cup in July.
The Chilean’s arrival represents a continuation of Chelsea’s decision to focus on recruiting some of the world’s younger talents.
Juan Mata, Oscar, Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard are among those to have arrived in the last 18 months and Malaga midfielder Isco could this summer be set to follow.
Marouane Fellaini – Everton
Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini admits he still has a burning desire to join Chelsea this summer.
The 25-year-old Belgian international insists he will not push for a move away from Goodison Park at the end of the season, but concedes that the opportunity to test himself in the Champions League would be too good to turn down.
Radamel Falcao – Atletico Madrid
Also highly likely to be on Chelsea’s agenda for the summer is Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao. It has been widely reported that Falcao will be on the move at the end of the season, with Manchester City and Real Madrid also thought to be interested.
According to the Daily Star, the prolific Colombian has been told that he can leave the Vicente Calderon in the summer.
Isco – Malaga
Malaga playmaker Isco could be on his way to Chelsea this summer, according to bookmakers.
Isco has been linked with a move to the Premier League for some time. Chelsea and Manchester City have shown interest in the 20-year-old over the past twelve months, while Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham also believed to be keen.
Son Heung-Min – Hamburg
Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly joined the race to sign Hamburg forward Son Heung-Min, who has also been linked with Liverpool and Tottenham.
Dejan Lovren – Lyon
Liverpool and Chelsea are set to battle it out for Lyon defender Dejan Lovren this summer.
According to the Daily Mail, both Anfield and Stamford Bridge are readying bods for the 23-year-old in a bit to replace their ageing defenders.
Captain John Terry is now 32 years old and Lovren could be seen as a long-term replacement for him, especially as David Luiz has looked so impressive in a defensive midfield position.
Paulinho – Corinthians
Reported Chelsea target Paulinho is set to move to Europe this summer, according to Kia Joorabchian, whose company represents the Corinthians midfielder.
The 24-year-old was strongly linked to both Chelsea and Internazionale in the January transfer window but reiterated his desire to remain with the Brazilian club. But Joorabchian has now told TalkSport that Paulinho will join a big European club in the summer.
Stefan Kiessling – Bayer Leverkusen
Chelsea have been offered a cut-price deal for Bayer Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling as the German international plots a summer move to the Premier League.
Kiessling is determined to force a transfer away from Leverkusen at the end of the season and after seeing a dream switch to West Ham break down in January, he is said to have gone all-out to make sure he gets a move to England for the start of the next campaign.
According to reports in Germany, Kiessling has urged his agent to offer his services around Premier League clubs, and Chelsea are among the first, with the 29-year-old especially keen to play in London
Leighton Baines – Everton
Leighton Baines has emerged as a shock Chelsea target – despite the Stamford Bridge club persuading Ashley Cole to stay on for another year.
The prospect of England’s two leading left-backs playing for the same club would appear unlikely – but insiders suggest that highly-rated Baines may initially be employed as a left midfielder before dropping back when Cole quits. And with Everton gaffer David Moyes being talked about as a leading contender to replace Rafa Benitez as Chelsea boss, the Baines link suddenly looks a lot more realistic.
Edison Cavani – Napoli
Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis has hinted that Edinson Cavani could be allowed to leave the Serie A outfit in the summer.
The Uruguay international has scored an impressive 18 goals in 21 Serie A appearances this season and has attracted reported interest from Chelsea.
The 25-year-old penned a new five-year deal with the Naples outfit last year, with the striker’s new contract including a £52m release clause.
But De Laurentiis suggested Cavani would be allowed to quit the Serie A title chasers if the striker asked to leave at the end of the season.
Neilton – Santos
A new name has also been linked to Chelsea in recent speculation, with the Daily Mirror claiming that the Blues are trying to sign young Santos forward Neilton. The 19-year-old has unsurprisingly been dubbed the “new Neymar” by some, in reference to Neilton’s Santos teammate, who is just two years his senior.
The tag came after Neilton rose to fame with a hat-trick last month against Palmeiras in the semifinals of the Copa Sao Paulo Under-19 tournament.
There is thought to be a £5 million release clause in his contract, with both Chelsea and Manchester United said to be monitoring the situation.
Viktor Fischer – Ajax
Ajax’s 18-year-old forward Viktor Fischer is believed to be on the radar of Chelsea.
Already a full Denmark international, Fischer has scored six goals in his first nine Eredivisie appearances. He is already thought to have been scouted by the London club.
