Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud thanks Tottenham and Jose Mourinho

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has thanked Tottenham Hotspur during an interview after his side beat Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final – after Spurs had handed Chelsea breathing space in the top four.

Tottenham themselves secured a crucial three points in the race for Europa League qualification, as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Leicester City despite enjoying less than 30% of possession throughout the match.

A deflected Son Heung-min opener was followed by a brace from Harry Kane, who took his tally to 23 for the season despite a long-term hamstring issue. The win for Spurs, though, was enjoyed just as much by Chelsea.

That is because Chelsea hang on to third place in the Premier League table, a point above Leicester and with a game in hand thanks to Tottenham’s win. Giroud, who was linked with Spurs in January, thanked the north Londoners.

“Thanks to Spurs because Leicester did not win today,” Giroud said during BBC’s live coverage of the FA Cup semi-final, as per the Daily Express. “Focus on the Premier League. We want to finish top three and win another FA Cup.”

TBR’s view – Who will finish where?

The likelihood now seems as if Manchester United may have the chance to leapfrog Leicester, and with momentum shifting towards Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side – despite the 3-1 semi-final defeat – they are favourites for fourth.

Chelsea are likely to remain in second, while the battle for sixth remains up for grabs. With Leicester seemingly likely to finish in fifth, Tottenham and Wolves are both in line to finish sixth. Wolves have dropped to seventh.

But Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have a game in hand – and sit two behind Tottenham, with Crystal Palace to play on Monday night. It is certainly an exciting finish to the campaign.
