Sunderland are reportedly running the rule over a Chelsea youngster ahead of a potential deal at the end of the season.
According to The Shields Gazette, Chelsea midfielder Ruben Sammut is on trial at Sunderland, hoping to win a contract for next season.
Sammut’s contract at Chelsea is due to expire in the summer and Sunderland could offer him the chance to move to the North East.
The 21-year-old midfielder played in last week’s under-23 clash with Stoke City and could be in contention to feature again tonight.
Sunderland’s under-23 side travel to Aston Villa tonight to play in Division 2 of the Premier League 2.
Sammut started against Stoke and might be given a second opportunity to impress and win a contract at The Stadium of Light.

The Scotland under-21 international spent the first half of this season on loan at Falkirk, getting senior playing time under his belt for the first time.
And after featuring 16 times for the Scottish Championship side, Sammut’s next move needs to be in the best interest of his career.
Now aged 21, it is unlikely that Sammut will break into the Chelsea first-team and a move to Sunderland could help his game progress.
But he needs to impress the powers that be at Sunderland tonight in order to show why the Black Cats should gamble on him.
