Chelsea seal a big-money return move for David Luiz - Twitter Reacts

In a sensational move, David Luiz has re-joined Chelsea for a fee believed to be £30 million, just three years after leaving for PSG. Antonio Conte has been searching for defensive reinforcements all summer and the club have shocked everybody by bringing Luiz back to Stamford Bridge. He had a successful first spell at the club, with the highlight being Chelsea’s 2011/12 Champions League triumph.

Chelsea have been short at centre-back this season, with Gary Cahill and John Terry starting all three matches. There has been a lack of competition, which made it imperative that they managed to sign at least one centre-half before the transfer deadline.

Kurt Zouma is also at the club and once he recovers from his long term injury problem, Chelsea will have real depth at centre back. There could also be the opportunity for Conte to switch to three at the back, which would be welcomed by the Italian as it is his favoured system.

David Luiz has had his critics in the past due to his laissez-faire style of defending, with Gary Neville famously calling him a ‘Playstation player’. These doubts remain and there will be some that will be surprised that Conte has brought Luiz back to the club. He doesn’t seem to be a defender that would appeal to Conte and there will be critics that call this a panic buy.

However, Luiz has become more consistent in Ligue 1 and is less error-prone than he once was. His reading of the game marks him as a quality defender, as displayed by his average of 2.4 interceptions per game last season. This may seem low, but he was playing in a dominant PSG side which was rarely without the ball. Luiz was a key part of the defensive unit and he can continue to be disciplined in his defending under Conte.

A huge advantage of having David Luiz in your defence is his technical ability. He is arguably the best centre-back on the ball and he is excellent at launching attacks from deep, either through his passing range or powerful runs into the attacking half. This flair allows Luiz to put his team on the front foot and it is a good asset to have in the Premier League, as the matches are very open.

The Brazilian is a popular player among the squad and fans at Chelsea, which means he will be able to settle in straight away. Luiz improves the starting eleven at Stamford Bridge and should walk into the team after the international break. If Conte manages to curb Luiz’s attacking impulses, it will be a great signing for the club.

Here is how Twitter reacted to this sensational deadline deal:
