Chelsea round-up: Manchester United star rejected move; Conte hits out at Mourinho; midfielder turns down deal

Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard has told the Times that he rejected offers from both Chelsea and Arsenal as a youngster before deciding on a move to Manchester United from where he grew up in Liverpool. Now with three caps to his name, it seems that the Blues missed out on what would have been one of the best products of their youth academy.

Instead, Lingard is now warming the bench at Old Trafford where he has made just 13 starts out of United’s 39 fixtures so far this season and has not played a full 90 minutes this campaign.

Lingard’s manager, Jose Mourinho, may be a popular figure amongst Chelsea fans after his two spells in charge at Stamford Bridge, but appeared to criticise the club when he labelled them as a defensive side who were good on the counter-attack in a recent press conference. Current boss Antonio Conte reacted as he told the press, as quoted by ESPN:

“I don’t like to reply to the other coaches. I don’t like this joking. He’s playing. I have the experience to understand this.”

The two were involved in an exchange on the touchline when the two sides met earlier this season, with Mourinho clearly unimpressed by the Italian’s exuberant celebrations.

The two clubs could also be set to do battle for Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko as the Mirror report that the 22-year-old has turned down a new contract at the French club with his head already turned by an offer from England if the club’s bosses are correct in their thinking.

The holding midfielder has attracted plaudits for his tough-tackling displays from deep, and it seems that he would fit in perfectly alongside N’Golo Kante in a midfield duo for the Blues. However, they could face competition from both Manchester United and Manchester City for the Frenchman.
