Chelsea round-up: Deal with Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko agreed; Thibaut Courtois wants new deal; N’Golo Kante “overrated” says Joey Barton

Chelsea have agreed terms with in-demand midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko which could see him move from Monaco to Chelsea, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague on Twitter. The club are still thought to have to agree a fee with the club, but have reached an agreement on personal terms.

The 22-year-old Frenchman has scored three goals in 41 games from his holding midfield position, including a crucial header to get the south coast side past Manchester City in the Champions League, and has attracted attention and interest from all over Europe.

In more positive news, it seems that goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is happy in west London and is set to rebuff any approach from Real Madrid as Sky Sports and ESPN have translated what he told Spanish radio station Cadena SER:

“I have two more years of contract left. In London everything is going well for me and I am happy. At the moment we have not talked about a renewal. Now we are focused on winning the league, even though we have a ten-point advantage. Both the club and the coach want to keep calm now and not think about renewals.”

“We will see at the end of the season whether they offer me something, but at the moment there is no offer. Would I like to be offered a new deal? Sure. I’m very happy at Chelsea and if they want to continue with me, that would be great.”

The Belgian has been vital this season as he continues to establish himself as one of the most important players in the Chelsea squad and one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

One player accepted to be one of the greatest in the top flight of English football is N’Golo Kante, but he has been questioned by Burnley midfielder Joey Barton as he told Le Journal du Dimanche, as translated by Metro and Goal:

“In England, there are boxes and it is impossible to get out of them. At the moment, for example, everyone swears by N’Golo Kante. It’s fashionable. For pundits, he’s the best midfielder in the world. That’s not the case – he’s very good, but I played against him three weeks ago.”

“He’s a phenomenal destroyer who played in a phenomenal team, but he’s not a creator. And it’s impossible to be so definitive with a player who has not played in the Champions League. Two years ago, no-one knew who he was and I was surprised that the scouts missed him. I’m sceptical.”

Kante is regarded as one of the best signings of the season and is set to become the first player to win back to back Premier League titles with different clubs.
