Despite reports that Diego Costa is set to agree a new five-year deal at Chelsea, Sky Sports state that they believe that such speculation is premature and that, whilst talks are ongoing, the two parties have not yet reached an agreement on the terms of a potential new contract.
Costa was expected to complete a move away in the summer after interest from China in January, but it now seems likely that the club will make him their top earner in an attempt to convince him to stay.
Another player whose future was unclear is Arturo Vidal, the Bayern Munich midfielder who was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in January. However, the Chilean told Sport Bild, as translated by Goal and ESPN:
“They are only rumours that come about quickly. Ultimately, I played four very successful years under coach Conte at Juventus [from 2011-2014]. But there’s no reason for me to leave Bayern. I wear this jersey with pride. I feel good, my wife feels good and the children are happy. And I still have big goals in Munich.”
The all-action midfielder featured for the German side in their thrashing of Arsenal last night and it seems that Champions League success would only further convince him to remain in Germany.
If wing-back Marcos Alonso is to be believed, though, the Copa America winner is missing out, as the Spaniard has spoken out to praise the atmosphere and unity of the squad as he told the club website:
“We have been going out for dinner once a month all together as a group, just enjoying each other’s company off the pitch as well. It’s been a great help and the atmosphere within the squad is amazing. You can see that when we’re on the pitch. It’s organised by the manager and the captain and it’s good fun for everyone.”
Such relationships can easily be seen on the field, where the team are leading the Premier League and are already looking like comfortable favourites to lift the title in May.
