The Daily Mail report, following quotes published by German outlet Bild, that Chelsea could turn to Bayern Munich star Jerome Boateng in their aim to improve their defence this summer. With Southampton reportedly demanding more than the £50 million expected for Virgil Van Dijk, the Bundesliga defender could become an alternative to boost the Blues’ back-line.
Boateng has Premier League experience after a brief spell with Manchester City, but has seen his first team place come under threat in Munich with the arrival of Niklas Sule from Hoffenheim, and he could be tempted by a move to Chelsea if the offer is right.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail also claim that central midfielder Nemanja Matic is still yet to reach an agreement over a new deal, with his existing contract set to expire next summer. The midfielder is still being targeted by Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United and it may force the Blues to sell or let him go for free in a year.
The Serbian was one of the most disappointing performers at the FA Cup final on Saturday as Chelsea crashed to a humiliating defeat to Arsenal, but Antonio Conte is still expected to see him as a key figure in his plans for the future.
He could face increased competition for places, though, as Gary Cahill revealed to the London Evening Standard that he is confident that the club has all it needs to attract big names this summer, saying:
“Since I have been here I have won six medals in five years and I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t want to join Chelsea. I have been involved in semi-finals and finals of cup competitions and won League titles – there is no reason I can think of why someone wouldn’t want to be here… I look at the size of the club, the fanbase the calibre of players that come in, it’s got everything going for it.”
Heavy investment is likely as the Blues face the added pressure of extra fixtures from the Champions League alongside a Premier League title defence.
