Spanish newspaper El Confidencial claim that Antonio Conte and Chelsea will go all out in their attempts to persuade Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata to join them this summer with it looking increasingly likely that the Spanish international will leave the Bernabeu this summer with his eyes on more game time.
The 24-year-old has scored 17 goals this season despite making just 36 appearances to date, with 20 of those performances coming off the bench as a substitute. Having worked together with Conte in Turin at Juventus, it seems possible that the striker could be open to the potential move.
However, Antonio Conte clearly does not feel that spending will be required to be successful once again next season after seeming to hit out at some his competitors as he revealed in a press conference, quoted by BBC Sport:
“It’s important to understand it’s not always who spends more wins. This season isn’t the only season both Manchester clubs have spent a lot of money. Look at the past… (We want) to build, also, slowly slowly to become a real power… To win in England these days is not easy. Now, it’s a good season. To become a great or fantastic season there is only one way: to try to win.”
The likes of Manchester City and Manchester United both spent huge sums of money last summer, whilst Liverpool are also expected to splash the cash this summer in an attempt to challenge Chelsea’s title defence next season. Conte though, clearly remains confident that he can do so without spending huge sums.
His transfer spending may in part be funded by the sale of winger Christian Atsu. ESPN claim that Newcastle have a right to buy him if they make an offer worth £6.5 million must be made within seven days of the end of the season, with one year left on Atsu’s Chelsea contract and terms having already been agreed with the Magpies.
Currently on loan at St. James’ Park, the Ghanaian has been in and out of the side as Newcastle have secured promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking, and has scored on four occasions and made a further three assists in his 33 appearances for the club this campaign.
