Chelsea could be set to sell a key player as the Guardian state that Manchester United are confident of completing a deal for Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic. The Mirror believe that any deal for the midfield enforcer would net the Blues an impressive £50 million, despite the fact that Matic is in the final year of his contract.
Matic has not traveled with the first team squad on their pre-season tour in order to finalise a move away from Stamford Bridge, and United seem to be the most likely destination. That would see him join forces with former manager Jose Mourinho, who brought him back to Stamford Bridge in 2014.
Another transfer between two top six clubs could involve Chelsea, as Sky Sports say that Antonio Conte is considering a move for Arsenal ace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The England international is in a similar position to Matic in the final 12 months of his deal at the Emirates, with Liverpool and Manchester City also linked.
Now, the Blues could increase their efforts to bring the versatile midfielder to west London next week. With a deal for Alvaro Morata tied up, he could become one of their top targets for the remaining five weeks of the summer transfer window. Arsene Wenger insists he won’t be sold, but Chelsea may test their resolve.
Antonio Conte is also keen to bring another striker to the squad, with Fernando Llorente seen as the perfect mentor to help Alvaro Morata adapt to life in the Premier League, say the Independent. Whilst Conte may be keen to reunite with his former player from Juventus, Swansea are demanding a huge £30 million for their star man.
For a 32-year-old whose contract will expire next summer, that is a substantial fee which may prove to be too much for Chelsea. This deal could be a sign of Roman Abramovich’s commitment to his manager only a week after giving the Italian a new contract.
