Chelsea reportedly ahead of Tottenham in transfer chase for winger Thomas Lemar

Chelsea have overtaken London rivals Tottenham in the chase to sign Atletico Madrid winger Thomas Lemar this month, according to the Daily Telegraph.

They report that both clubs want to make improvements to their forward options this month and would prefer to loan the Frenchman until the end of the season.

That would give them a chance to assess whether they want to sign him on a full time basis in the summer, with Lemar apparently having been told he can leave Atletico.

The report says Spurs had been hoping to steal a march on their rivals by quickly tying up a deal for Lemar, but now must respond with Chelsea in the box seat and competition coming in from Russia.

TBR’s View – Do Tottenham fans have faith in Levy to outwit Abramovich?

Roman Abramovich has his transfer team at Chelsea but there’s no doubt the Russian would sanction the necessary spending on clauses and wages to get this mid-season loan over the line.

Do Tottenham fans believe Daniel Levy will go all the way and match the Blues? Even though it’s a loan, there are still plenty of costs associated with those in the modern game.

If Spurs wanted to steal a march, they should have paid the necessary money for Lemar by now. The fact it’s dragging on only seems likely to benefit Chelsea, but Tottenham supporters will hope that’s not the case.
