There was nothing riding on this game for either side with Sunderland already relegated and Chelsea already crowned champions, but it was an emotional farewell for John Terry and the opportunity for Chelsea to secure a record breaking 30th victory of the season.
When Javier Manquillo rifled home a powerful shot in the third minute for Sunderland, it seemed that he could have been set to spoil the party, but Chelsea’s quality ensured that that wasn’t the case.
It took just five minutes for Willian to equalise as he pounced after Marcos Alonso’s effort cannoned off the crossbar, and Diego Costa then set up Eden Hazard to take the lead early in the second half with Pedro adding a third after his introduction later in the half.
There was even time for substitute Michy Batshuayi to add a brace in injury time and take his tally of Premier League goals for the season to five, having scored more in his last three games than in his first 16.
