With the opportunity to secure the double and for Antonio Conte to win his first ever cup final as a manager, Chelsea went into the tie as huge favourites against their London rivals only to come out on the end of a humiliating defeat.
Questions can be asked of the referee for Arsenal’s controversial first goal in just the fourth minute, with accusations of both handball and offside, but Alexis Sanchez’s strike just gave way to total dominance from the Gunners as chance after chance fell their way.
Chelsea were never at the races and their afternoon went from bad to worse when Victor Moses was foolishly sent off for a dive as a second bookable offence.
Diego Costa gave the Blues some hope with an equaliser which deflected in off Per Mertesacker, but that hope was short lived and just three minutes later Aaron Ramsey strolled through the middle of the field to pounce on a free header in the box to take the lead again.
