Chelsea now looking to sign £35m Italian defender after watching him in person

Chelsea are looking to beef up their defence and could make a move for Italian international defender, Alessandro Buongiorno.

Buongiorno has emerged as one of the top defenders in Serie A this season. His form for Torino has been impressive and he has since won a call-up to the Italian national team, where he has been picked in defence by Luciano Spalletti.

However, his form is also attracting admiring glances from across Europe now, with Chelsea among the teams keen on him.

According to The Sun, Chelsea want to sign Buongiorno after keeping a close eye on him recently.

It’s reported how Chelsea have watched Buongiorno several times in the last few weeks and plan on taking even more looks at the defender in the coming games.

Buongiorno is described in the report as being an ‘aggressive’ defender and is only behind two players in the whole of Serie A when it comes to tackles per game. The Italian side believe they can squeeze £35m out of the Blues for the deal.

Buongiorno to Chelsea makes sense

Despite all the money spent and all the players who have come to the club, Chelsea are still remarkably short in some areas.

Defence is an area they need to make improvements on and they need to get a defender in the middle who can dominate.

Clearly, Buongiorno is made of good stuff and given the background and history of Italian defenders, Chelsea fans would rightly be excited by his arrival.

Mauricio Pochettino made the call in midweek for more signings of certain quality. Todd Boehly is likely to back his man again but this time, it needs to be spent on the right players.

Buongiorno, then, might well be someone who fits the bill.
