Chelsea: Juventus defender targeted; Brazilian to leave; opportunity for French 29-year-old

Having spoken on Saturday on the lack of depth in the Chelsea squad in defence currently, with Kurt Zouma out injured, and Conte claiming that he only has four fit first team defenders, Swiss source Blick claim that a move for Juventus right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner could be on the cards. The Swiss defender’s position is at risk following the arrival of Dani Alves, who has displaced him so far this season, and reports suggest that Chelsea may request that he comes to London as part of a swap deal involving Juan Cuadrado.

Having played under Conte when he was in charge at the Serie A champions, initial reports suggest that the 32-year-old would be open to the move and could add depth in the defence, allowing Branislav Ivanovic to provide cover centrally if required.

Having starred at Euro 2016 for Switzerland this summer, Lichtsteiner has vast experience at the very top level in Italy and Europe, and would be bringing that to Stamford Bridge at a time when Conte seeks to bring in a new generation of defenders to provide a long term replacement for John Terry.

Talksport also claim that there could be a major signing in midfield, with talks stalling between the Turin club and PSG’s Blaise Matuidi. The French central midfielder looks set to depart the Paris club after boss Unai Emery told him that he was free to leave. Juventus are keen on signing the 29-year-old as a replacement for Paul Pogba, but the deal is stalling over complications created by the Frenchman’s wage demands, believed to be out of the Italians’ wage range.

This has alerted Chelsea and Manchester United, who could make a late transfer window move for the player. With N’Golo Kante already added this summer, it seems unlikely that Conte would want to splash out on another midfielder given that defence and strikers seem higher priority.

However, Matuidi would add depth and quality given the questionable form of the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic and John-Obi Mikel and may be key if Chelsea want to up their challenge from Champions League place to the title.

Following on from the news of the departure of German flop Marko Marin, Brazilian Lucas Piazon is the latest man set to leave Stamford Bridge, as the Blues look to clear some of the players who were loaned out last term. The Daily Mail say that Feyenoord, Roma and Lazio are monitoring the 22-year-old who has been out on loan four times in the past three years and has failed to make the breakthrough into the Blues’ first team.

Piazon had initially performed well on loan at Vitesse Arnhem and has unquestionable potential, but of late he has stunted that growth and failed to kick on. Now, Conte is keen to clear out his squad of players like Marin and Piazon, and the Brazilian will be the next name out of the door as the club await permanent offers from Italy and Holland.
