Report: Chelsea now want to sign 'superstar' £26m Tottenham target in January
Tottenham have been tracking USA star Weston McKennie for some time now, but Chelsea could scupper any transfer plans Spurs have for the Juventus ace.
McKennie was one of the stars of the World Cup with the USA but couldn’t do enough to stop the Netherlands seeing them off in the round of 16.
However, McKennie’s performances once again ignited transfer talk. Spurs have long been linked with a move for the midfielder and reports have suggested the World Cup has only enhanced that possibility.
But while Spurs might fancy their chances of a deal, Calciomercato reports today that Chelsea are now also keen on signing McKennie. Their report suggests that Chelsea’s new ownership team would like to expand its presence in America and with that, they see McKennie as an option.
It’s claimed Juventus are looking for around 30 million Euros (£26m) to let McKennie go.
Thought to be considered a potential ‘superstar‘ by Fabio Paratici, McKennie has impressed. And with Tottenham keen on adding new faces in January, he has proven himself to be a good potential option with his performances in Qatar.
TBR’s View: Chelsea a problem for Tottenham in January
The Blues are going to be an issue for a number of teams in January, Tottenham among them. Todd Boehly is so keen to splash the cash and improve Chelsea that any player getting linked with a big club is likely to see Chelsea linked as well.
For Spurs, this could be an issue. More for the fact that Boehly will pay big transfer fees and offer bigger wages than Spurs might be able to.
In terms of Weston McKennie, he’s a player who improves both squads. But whether he improves both first XI’s is another matter entirely. At £26m, he’s not the most expensive player on the market. However, it’s not a snip either and both clubs might be wary of going too big on this one.
