Chelsea join the race for Cristiano Ronaldo

Following the speculated return of Jose Mourinho this summer, Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo has also been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

The £80million forward, who was sent off last night in a dramatic Copa del Rey final loss to bitter local rivals Atletico, is on a summer shopping list put together by Mourinho according to the Daily Mail.

With Roman Abramovich set to spend big this summer, we could well see Ronaldo playing for the Blues next season.

It’s reported that Manchester United have first option to buy their former hero from Real. However, the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson has clouded the issue to an extent.

This season, Ronaldo has scored 46 goals in 46 appearances in both the Champions League and La Liga. This 1:1 strike rate is fantastic.

Mourinho would surely make him his main target as he prepares to strengthen the Chelsea squad ahead of the 2013/14 campaign.

Having played under the Portuguese manager for the past three years, he could opt for a move to Chelsea over a transfer back to Old Trafford.

This rumour however seems strange, Mourinho’s relationship with Ronaldo was under scrutiny last weekend when the forward appeared to shout ‘**** you’ at his coach after scoring his 200th goal for Real.

After spending 4 seasons in Spain with Madrid, Ronaldo has seemingly become frustrated by the lack of harmony at the club. A move away from the Bernabeu has been suggested since before January with United leading the chase to secure his signature up until now.

Money would not be an issue for Chelsea, as we all know. Free-spending owner, Abramovich has spent huge sums of money on players in the past, a move for Ronaldo would merely prove a drop in the ocean.

Ronaldo has been the key man in Mourinho’s Real Madrid squad and the latter wants to keep the partnership together. If, as expected, he does return to Chelsea, expect a huge bid to me made by the London club.
