Chelsea: Interest in Spurs midfielder; reaction to Sunderland win; defender monitored

The Times claim that Chelsea, alongside Bayern Munich, are monitoring the situation of England international Eric Dier as he struggles for game time at White Hart Lane after Mauricio Pochettino brought Victor Wanyama to Tottenham in the summer.

Eric Dier could potentially fit in well at Chelsea alongside N’Golo Kante in midfield and the Blues will be desperate for his potential as a homegrown player given the increasing lack of options at Stamford Bridge, particularly if John Terry should depart in the summer.

After last night’s narrow victory over Sunderland, Antonio Conte reserved special praise for goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after he kept his side in the game with a superb save in the dying moment of injury time. Conte told the media:

“We created many chances to score the second goal and kill the game. At the end, Sunderland had a great chance to draw. Only a great save from Thibaut allowed us to win. But to win 10 games in a row is not easy and I am pleased for my players. It’s fantastic, above all in this league when you have to fight in every game until the end to take the three points. They deserve this for their commitment and work-rate every day.”

Cesc Fabregas was on the scoresheet for the Blues as he continues his resurgence having been sidelined for much of the start of the campaign.

Chelsea are preparing to speak to Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk, say the Daily Record, despite his preference for a move to Manchester City. Antonio Conte is known to want to add to his defence and struggled to bring in his preferred targets in the summer.

The Dutchman has been in top form for the Saints on the south coast this campaign and has stood out with his confident displays, linking him to a number of big Premier League clubs.
