The Telegraph claim Newcastle are in talks to bring in Michael Emenalo as director of football – and Chelsea fans have reacted on Twitter to the news.

Emenalo, 56, is quickly emerging as the most-likely man to take over at Newcastle. The new owners have turned to a director of football.

That is, after finally bringing in a new manager in the form of Eddie Howe. The ex-Bournemouth gaffer has penned a deal until June 2024.

Emenalo is widely considered as the man behind Chelsea’s success. He spent six years as Chelsea’s sporting director, weaving magic in the market.

He brought in Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and others – while overseeing the academy. It has produced Mason Mount, Reece James and others.

The ex-Nigeria international is well-liked by Chelsea fans. He went to Monaco between 2017 and 2019, and has been out of work since.

Newcastle desperately need a director of football. Where Howe has starred over the years, is in terms of man management and tactical awareness.

But when it comes to spending, there are examples where Howe has struggled. Dom Solanke, Jordon Ibe – even Jefferson Lerma were expensive.

Newcastle have got the ideal head coach in, not a manager. They need a transfer expert alongside him, one that can rejuvenate the academy.
