Chelsea fans have a lot to say after the bombshell 74 FA charges emerge

Chelsea were charged with 74 breaches of the FA’s agent regulation rules between 2009 and 2022 on Thursday.

The breaches are primarily focused on the period between the 2010/11 and 2015/16 campaigns under the stewardship of former owner Roman Abramovich.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital purchased the Blues in 2022 after the Russian billionaire was forced to relinquish control of the club due to political ties.

Chelsea have endured PSR woes under Clearlake, most notably in 2024 when the Blues were involved in a supposed transfer merry-go-round with Premier League clubs also struggling with the PSR rules.

However, Boehly has reportedly self-reported the breaches to the FA, and now that the news of the charges is sweeping the media, Blues supporters have shared their views.

Chelsea fans appear relaxed about the FA’s charges

Boehly has enforced wholesale changes behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge to ensure that Chelsea remain financially stable under his guise.

Considering the Blues’ ownership has confessed to the irregularities to the FA, the supporters are confident that any subsequent punishment will not be as severe as initially feared.

One supporter wrote: “Well, the FA breached rules by Chelsea shouldn’t be a big issue because it was self-reported. Rival fans will jump at nothing to talk rubbish about us, but I understand, you guys have been starved for too long.”

“We reported it. I don’t think that the penalty will be severe. Besides, it didn’t happen under this administration,” another said.

While another supporter also echoed the belief that Chelsea will make it out the other side of the FA charges unscathed: “Bruh… 74 charges?! Okay, so the FA really went full audit mode on the Abramovich era. Most of this is old news (2010–2016), but still, seeing it all laid out is wild. Chelsea fans, brace yourselves, it’s gonna be one of those ‘we survived worse’ moments.”

Boehly, despite widespread public opinion, has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to rectify the mess left over from Abramovich’s tenure, with Chelsea’s use of intra-company asset trading to ease PSR liability being a particular example.

The fans have also expressed sympathy for Boehly, as he will be the direct recipient of the actions of his predecessor and face any consequences that may arise.

“The current owners actually reported the irregularities, but I still feel sorry for them. They are going through a lot to clear the house. We have a proper structure now and are well set for the future.”

Another wrote: “74 charges over things from 2009 to 2016? That’s nearly a decade ago. Chelsea have moved on, new owners, new era. No point dragging the past to attack the present.”

“Chelsea’s ownership self reported and set money aside for potential issues upon taking control of the club, as well as co operating fully with the FA, so hopefully it’s just a fine and nothing more. Nervous wait.”

What did the FA say about Chelsea’s charges?

The last thing Chelsea fans expected to read today as the squad prepares to resume club football with a clash against Brentford on Saturday, was the news of the FA charges.

And while there is still confusion regarding the exact nature of the breaches, the FA released a statement clarifying the situation.

“The Football Association has today charged Chelsea FC with breaches of regulations J1 and C2 of The FA Football Agents Regulations, Regulations A2 and A3 of The FA Regulations on Working with Intermediaries, and Regulations A1 and B3 of The FA Third Party Investment in Player Regulations.

“In total, 74 charges have been brought against Chelsea FC. The conduct that is subject of the charges ranges from 2009 and 2022 and primarily relates to events which occurred between 2010/11 to 2015/16 playing seasons.

“Chelsea FC has until 19 September 2025 to respond.”
