Chelsea could now move for £20m player who’s already labelled Reece James ‘unbelievable’

Chelsea are eyeing a shock January move for Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson.

That’s according to Football Transfers, which claims that Chelsea are considering the possibility of meeting Newcastle’s £18 million asking price for the striker.

It’s no secret that Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in the market for a new forward this month.

Nicolas Jackson is currently at AFCON 2024 and struggled to find the back of the net regularly in the first half of the season.

Chelsea are lacking real quality up front, with Christopher Nkunku sidelined and Armando Broja’s future remains unclear.

The Blues have been linked with big-money moves for the likes of Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney. But it seems they could turn to a more affordable option in Callum Wilson this month.

Chelsea eyeing surprise move for Callum Wilson

Football Transfers claims Chelsea are weighing up the idea of meeting Newcastle’s £18 million price tag for Wilson.

The Blues are apparently willing to overlook their strategy of targeting younger players with a move for Wilson. The outlet also notes that Chelsea believe Wilson could offer them a ‘quality’ option for at least 18 months.

With Newcastle looking to bring in a new midfielder, they will be forced to sell to buy before moving on that front.

Wilson has proven to be a reliable source of goals for Newcastle since joining for £20 million back in September 2020. The Englishman has netted 46 goals in 102 appearances for the Magpies.

The striker has already heaped praise on Chelsea’s skipper Reece James too, labelling the Englishman as an ‘unbelievable’ right-back.

“I think Reece James looks more robust [than Trent Alexander-Arnold], should I say, but I’ve never trained with him or played with him,” he told the Footballer’s Football Podcast back in September 2022.

“I can only comment on what I’ve seen… I’ve seen Reece James and he’s scored some unbelievable goals against us. He’s an unbelievable right-back as well.”

It would certainly be interesting to see Wilson link up with his England teammate at Stamford Bridge.

As a stop-gap signing, this could be a smart move from Chelsea as they look to add goals to their side.

But they have made a habit of targeting young talents over the past 18 months and it remains to be seen whether or not they will move for a 31-year-old striker.
