Chelsea could make last minute attempt to outbid Arsenal for 'fantastic' player, journalist claims
Ian McGarry has suggested that Chelsea could actually try and gazump Arsenal at the last minute in a bid to sign Ben White, on the Transfer Window Podcast.
Gianluca Di Marzio reported last night that Arsenal were just ‘one step away’ from sealing a deal for the Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back.
However, that step involves agreeing a fee, and both Everton and Chelsea are keeping a keen eye on developments.
They are hoping that the price that Brighton want for White could shock Arsenal.
And it is suggested that Chelsea could well make a rival offer, if the Gunners do fail to meet Brighton’s actual asking price.
“Everton and Chelsea are to our understanding are playing a waiting to see if Arsenal realise the valuation that Brighton feel is correct for their 23-year-old centre-back,” McGarry said.
“And then they will perhaps try and gazump Arsenal by offering more money.”
A cause for concern?
This news may be nothing to panic about just yet for Arsenal, but it will add a layer of concern.
If Chelsea enter the race for White then they may have the financial power to blow them out of the water.
Chelsea also have Champions League football on offer, which could be tempting for the England international, who has been labelled ‘fantastic’ by Ian Wright (ITV).
However, what Arsenal can offer White which Chelsea may not be able to is regular first-team football.
Thomas Tuchel’s side’s defence has been a major asset since his arrival and the German may be loathed to make any big changes to his backline early on in the season, which could work to Arsenal’s advantage.
