Chelsea: Conte wants Spurs star; interest in Frenchman confirmed; attacker on way out?
Chelsea’s week on the pitch hasn’t been ideal. They got a hammering last time out at the hands of Arsenal, they needed extra time to stumble past Leicester in the newly-renamed EFL Cup, and they also dropped three points at home thanks to a Jordan Henderson stunner for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. That has meant that Antonio Conte has taken a real look at bringing in new players in January.
One area of interest for the passionate Italian manager is the left-back slot. On transfer deadline day Conte made the move to bring in Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina in a deal worth £25million. It looks as though the Chelsea boss isn’t wholly convinced by the Spaniard though, and a move could be made for another left-back.
The man in question is Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies, and the usually reliable ESPN say Chelsea are weighing up the possibility of making a move for the Welshman in January. The 23-year-old is playing second fiddle to Danny Rose at White Hart Lane at the moment, and you’d imagine he’d be open to a switch in order to gain more playing time.
There was also news about a striker signing that didn’t happen a couple of years ago, and that’s when then manager Jose Mourinho chose to bring in the hot-headed Diego Costa. They nearly signed someone else though, and he probably would’ve been just as effective; Kevin Gameiro, who now plies his trade for Atletico Madrid.
He has been speaking to the media, and he said:
“El Cholo [Simeone] phoned me and told me he wanted Diego Costa, but it was very difficult and I was the other option.
“It does not upset me, that happens in football. Now I’m in Madrid and that’s the main thing. I spoke with Simeone and everything was clear. He is clear and I like that.
“I am very different from Diego Costa, we don’t have the same characteristics. Simeone told me that he wanted me, he was clear about that and I was as well.”
There is no doubt that this would’ve been another astute piece of business by the self-proclaimed Special One at the time, but for all his flaws, you cannot fault what Diego Costa has done at Stamford Bridge during his two years there so far.
The final bit of news for Chelsea today is regarding a potential outgoing player in the form of Brazilian Oscar. The 25-year-old has started five of the six last league games for the London team, but if Conte makes a switch to the 3-5-2 formation, there is no place for the talented attacking midfielder.
Reports in Italy say that AC Milan are keeping tabs on Oscar’s situation at Stamford Bridge and could be tempted to make a bid if he becomes available next summer. The Italian side are prepared to spend up to £39million to acquire his services.
