After a disappointing defeat at White Hart Lane put an end to Chelsea’s hopes of securing a record breaking 14th consecutive win, Antonio Conte spoke out to discuss the loss thanks to Dele Alli’s brace, saying:
“I saw a game with a great balance. It is not easy to play against Tottenham. But we played with a good personality to create the chances to score a goal, but we could not take them. It is strange for us to concede these goals because we are defending well, and they are in a crucial moment. At the end of the first half and then in the second half after we miss the chances to score, but this can happen. We must work hard and be pleased with our position in the table, but know this league is tough until the end for the Champions League, for the title… This is a different defeat. [Compared] to the one in September, today we lost the game, but showed that we were a team. Against Arsenal, we weren’t a team, today we were.”
The Italian refused to criticise his team but had been outwitted by Mauricio Pochettino tactically and his players failed to live up to the occasion on Wednesday evening.
Another Chelsea boss from Italy was Carlo Ancelotti, now in charge of Bayern Munich and reported target Arturo Vidal. However, the Premier League winner spoke out to rubbish the rumours linking the Chilean with a reunion with Conte, as he said:
“This is absolute nonsense.”
Some fans believed that Vidal’s liking of an Instagram post showing him with Conte at Juventus could hint at a move, but it seems clear now that the German club would not be prepared to sell their man.
A Chelsea midfielder could be heading for the exit door though as the Evening Standard report that young midfielder Reuben Loftus-Cheek will be allowed to leave on loan with West Ham the most likely destination if Slaven Bilic can guarantee gametime,
The youngster has played a very limited role under Conte this season but the club still have high hopes for his progress and are hoping that a loan move could kickstart his career.
