Chelsea are in ‘pole position’ to re-sign £75m star just three years after they sold him for £18m

Chelsea are always active in transfer windows.

The Blues have spent some big money over the last two years, and it looks like that is finally paying off. Enzo Maresca has done a remarkable job since taking over the club.

Chelsea are just four points behind second-place Arsenal, and although nobody at Stamford Bridge wants to entertain any talk of winning the Premier League title, it has to be said that they are heading in the right direction.

However, the Londoners could still do with reinforcements, and they could have an advantage over other clubs in the race to sign one player in this window.

Chelsea are in ‘pole position’ to sign Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi is among the most talented defenders in the Premier League.

The England international has developed brilliantly since he was sold by Chelsea to Crystal Palace for £18 million in the summer of 2021 (Guardian).

A number of clubs have since been interested in the Eagles defender. TBR Football exclusively revealed back in September that Chelsea are considering a move for Guehi in 2025.

The likes of Newcastle United, Liverpool and Manchester United are all interested in Guehi too, but Maresca’s side are said to be in ‘pole position’ in the race to sign him.

That’s according to GiveMeSport, who claim that the other clubs interested in Guehi – Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester United – are not in the market to make any big signings in this window.

The report claims that Chelsea are now contemplating whether to take advantage of those three clubs’ situations and make a move for the Palace star in the coming days.

The Eagles demanded £75 million for Guehi when Newcastle tried to sign him just five months ago. It remains to be seen how much they will ask for him now if Chelsea make their move.

Enzo Maresca has already hinted that Chelsea need a new defender

Chelsea have five experienced senior centre-halves at the club right now.

Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi and Tosin Adarabioyo are all available, but Maresca is without Benoît Badiashile and Wesley Fofana, who are both injured.

Yes, the Blues have Renato Veiga and Aaron Anselmino to play there, but to achieve great things this season, Chelsea will have to sign a new top-class centre-back.

Maresca has already spoken about his side’s defence – he feels Chelsea will not win the Premier League because of the kind of goals they concede.

He said in December: “No matter how many games we win, I think we are not ready to compete for the title. One of the reasons why is that the team that knows how to compete to win titles, they won’t concede goals we concede.”

That suggests that Maresca is not fully happy with his defence at the moment – Guehi would be a big upgrade and we think Chelsea should bring him back if they can in this window.
