Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has predicted that Tottenham will be knocked out of the Champions League when they face Ajax on Wednesday night.
Spurs travel to Amsterdam trailing 1-0 on aggregate from the first leg and will be looking to overturn that scoreline.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side do have key attacker Heung-Min Son back from suspension, but the Dutch side have already knocked out Real Madrid and Juventus in this season’s competition.
Nicholas has tipped Spurs to lose 2-1 on aggregate, while also stating that first-team duo Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen need to step up.
“Dele Alli has been really poor recently and Christian Eriksen needs to up his game too. Tottenham have to go after this game and they are chasing. I expect Ajax to score and I do not know whether Tottenham will have two in them. I see another painful night for the English team,” Nicholas wrote for Sky Sports.
Criticism of Alli certainly seems fair given that his form has fallen off a cliff in recent weeks and he’s nowhere near his best.
The attacking midfielder needs to try recapture his best form, as he’s a major goal threat and such an intelligent player in the final third when that is the case.
Meanwhile, midfield playmaker Eriksen has proven to be a key player in recent months and thrived in their new home stadium.
But his away form hasn’t matched that and he is due an elite performance on the road, which is why the fixture against his former side Ajax could be perfect timing.
