Charlie Nicholas believes Arsenal must invest in their defence in January, and took aim at some of Unai Emery’s current options at the back.
The Gunners conceded two more goals at the weekend against Leicester, taking their total tally in the Premier League to 17 in 12 games.
It was the thing Arsenal fans were most concerned about heading into the 2019/20 season, and so far the north Londoners have failed to convince at the back as was feared.
And former Arsenal striker Nicholas has questioned what the club have to work with currently.
Writing for Sky Sports, he said: “Calum Chambers has been in and out of the club in recent season, but now he is a regular full-back, and that is wrong – completely and utterly wrong.
“Rob Holding looks terrified now when he gets the ball, David Luiz looks comfortable with ball but uncomfortable without it and yet we still insist on playing out from the back.”
TBR’s view – Arsenal need a reliable presence
Arsenal badly need an individual at the back who can just be dependable and solid.
They need someone who can deliver 7/10 performances every game, someone who can transcend confidence and authority.
At the moment, they don’t have that presence at the back and whoever takes to the field looks unconvincing and lacking in guidance almost.
Most definitely, Arsenal need to find the funds from somewhere and invest sensibly in January, before the arrival of youngster William Saliba in the summer.
