Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has questioned what Everton are playing for in the rest of the season and believes they are just trying to get through unscathed to the summer.
The Toffees are out of cup competitions and have just eight league fixtures ahead of them this campaign.
They start at home to Chelsea on Sunday, who will be desperate for three points in their pursuit of the top four.
Marco SIlva’s team currently sit 11th in the Premier League and have a seven-point deficit to make up if they want to close down Wolverhampton Wanderers in seventh.
The Merseyside club look on course for a mid-table finish and some feel it’s below par after being active in the transfer window.
Nicholas has delivered a bold rant on Everton, but predicted them to earn a 1-1 draw at the weekend against Chelsea.
“I honestly don’t know what Everton are about. They’re just trying to get to the summer and see if they can keep their fans onside,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“They’re not expected to win [against Chelsea], but if they keep their organisation and get something from it the crowd will go away fairly content.”
Everton may have to put Silva’s first season down to a transitional year and they would only be back at square one next campaign if they sacked him.
The pressure should be on the Portuguese boss to deliver much more success at Goodison Park next year and have the Toffees competing properly around the European spots.
There are a number of quality players within the squad and they could be a real force with a few more additions over the summer.
Everton’s season may have the feeling of fizzling out, but they need to try pick up some momentum ahead of next year and show that progress can be made under Silva.
