Charlie Nicholas is not particularly impressed with Declan Rice and says that West Ham supporters have got too excited over the midfielder.
As per Sky Sports, Nicholas tried to cut Rice down to size by pointing out weaknesses in his game and blaming the Hammers fans for overblowing his ability.
He said: “Manuel Pellegrini is a smart man, and he likes to get a nice balance. Jack Wilshere and Mark Noble will be back in. People are far too excited about Declan Rice, with lots of mistakes and clumsiness there, as is the predictability with West Ham.”
Rice gave the ball away for Kosovo’s second goal against England on Tuesday, but also won the ball back expertly to allow the Three Lions to net their fourth.
TBR’s View – Nicholas is the one who has gone in clumsily here
Rice is a hugely talented holding midfielder and it’s unsurprising that West Ham fans are so happy to have him – he hasn’t been overhyped.
Of course he’s still got things to work on and improve, especially at international level, where the scrutiny is so much higher.
But he is a player who is adept at breaking up play, has good energy and can pick a pass – he can cut the mustard as an international holding midfielder, no doubt.
Why Nicholas has gone in two-footed is not quite clear but he’s got this one wrong. Rice is the real deal, and just because he has weaknesses, it should stop there being excitement around him.
