Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas feels Steve Bruce is doing a better job than Rafa Benitez did as Newcastle United manager.
Nicholas cites the performances of Miguel Almiron and Joelinton in the 1-0 victory over Chelsea on Saturday as evidence to back him up.
He said: “Has Steve Bruce done a better job than Rafa Benitez? I have said yes numerous times. Are they scoring more goals?
“Probably not, but he is getting a tune out of Miguel Almiron, while Joelinton looked like a proper centre forward at the weekend. His form has been average to say the least but he keeps getting there.”
TBR’s View – Claims that Bruce has done a better job than Benitez are so premature
Bruce is doing a good job in difficult circumstances and has Newcastle higher up the league than many would have predicted when he was appointed.
But Benitez stuck with Newcastle through relegation, gave the club hope and direction at a time when the fans needed something to cling to and then secured Premier League survival in multiple seasons despite a lack of investment in the squad.
Bruce would need to achieve something similar, as well as a cup run, for it to be a debate about whether he is doing a better job than Benitez. It’s premature to claim otherwise.
