Charlie Nicholas has ripped into senior Arsenal defender David Luiz and is amazed that he continues to be selected in the starting XI.
The 32-year-old made the move across London in the summer to join the Gunners from Chelsea and has been a regular in Unai Emery’s team.
With Emery recently departing, it fell on caretaker boss Freddie Ljungberg to lead the side at the weekend away to Norwich City.
Luiz completed 90 minutes in the 2-2 Premier League draw and was vulnerable alongside Shkodran Mustafi in the heart of defence.
The Brazilian centre-back was caught out positionally on a number of occasions by Norwich striker Teemu Pukki and was sloppy on the ball.
Sky Sports pundit Nicholas has aimed the criticism at Luiz that he doesn’t want to run and is stunned that Ljungberg selected him against Norwich.
“I also cannot understand how David Luiz is in the team. He just doesn’t want to run. He is only interested when he gets the ball at his feet,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
Arsenal host Brighton on Thursday in their next league game and it will intriguing to see who start in defence.
Luiz has certainly failed to make the desired impact since his arrival from Chelsea, which on paper looked a decent deal at £8million (BBC).
But he’s stood out for all the wrong reasons in the Gunners defence and it’s clear the team still lacks that leader to help them tighten up.
Luiz has always been a defender with his own specific style and that’s to have time on the ball, but Arsenal need a warrior at the back to fix their poor defensive record.
