Charlie Nicholas is confused behind Tottenham’s decision to sign wide player Steven Bergwijn in January from PSV Eindhoven.
Spurs completed a £27million (BBC) move for the Dutch winger on Wednesday and he’s arrived just before the close of the January transfer window.
The 22-year-old is an extremely skilful attacker that offers pace and trickery from the flank, which is why he may be well suited for the Premier League.
He’s scored six goals and managed 13 assists this season for PSV, but will now be looking to repeat that kind of form in North London for his new club.
Sky Sports pundit Nicholas believes that Spurs have needed to improve their defence this month, which is why he’s left a little bemused behind Bergwijn’s arrival.
“You cannot get out of jail with their defence. Why have they brought a winger in Steven Bergwijn? They have it all wrong. This is not a Jose Mourinho signing,” Nicholas wrote for Sky Sports.

TBR’s View:
Bergwijn looks like he could be a great addition to the Spurs squad on paper, but he will have his work cut out competing alongside the likes of Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela for a starting position.
Manager Jose Mourinho definitely could do with improving his backline, but perhaps the most worrying part for supporters if that they still haven’t signed a centre-forward this month to help fill the void of injured talisman Harry Kane.
Moura has shown that he struggles when operating through a central role and it’s going to be a tough second half of the season unless they pull out a deadline day striker signing.
