Glasgow Rangers defender Calvin Bassey has made Charlie Nicholas’ Scottish Premiership Team of the Season so far.

The 21-year-old Rangers gem has been a revelation under new Ibrox manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Bassey reportedly cost Rangers just £230,000 in June 2020.

Just 18 months on, it’s clear that the Ibrox club has definitely got themselves a bargain.

Bassey has already made 38 competitive appearances for the Light Blues.

Many of these have come at left-back, but lately he’s really been impressing at centre-back.

Leon Balogun has been out injured, so Bassey has been playing in central defence alongside Connor Goldson.

And the way he’s performing, it’s unlikely Van Bronckhorst will drop him once the veteran is available again.

Indeed, Nicholas believes Bassey has been better than both Goldson and Celtic loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers.

“This selection might surprise a few people but Bassey is a big, physical unit,” Nicholas wrote in the Scottish Daily Express.

“I like balance in the heart of my defence. He is young and has a very good left-foot and would provide that with Souttar.

“Bassey may have thought he would be left-back but he has gone in one and impressed. He is also good in the air.

“I think he has been better than Connor Goldson and I would go with him ahead of Cameron Carter-Vickers.”
