Pundit Charlie Nicholas has offered his verdict on whether Aston Villa will beat the drop after their first season back in the Premier League.
As per Sky Sports, Nicholas outlined Villa’s defensive vulnerabilities but expects them to do enough to survive, provided three key players perform.
He said: “With Aston Villa, John McGinn has done well, Jack Grealish has the quality, Wesley will and has scored if given the service, and they play wide men.
“There is a lot that I like about Villa. Defensively they are vulnerable, but they will be safe. I see a comfortable Villa win (against Brighton). 3-1.”
TBR’s View – Villa should have enough to survive if they can build on Norwich win
Villa spent big money in the summer and the early concerns this season centred around an inability to score – with a 0-0 home draw against ten-man West Ham side the nadir.
But the 5-1 away win against Norwich – a side who beat them twice in the Championship last season – should create a belief that Villa can score goals at this level.
They have to build on that though, and show they have firepower and the thrashing wasn’t a freak result, aided by some diabolical defending from a depleted Canaries side.
If they do that, and get McGinn and Grealish clicking like they were in the Championship, they should be fine. It would also be an idea to cut slack defending like the error Tyrone Mings made on Josip Drmic’s goal at Carrow Road.
