Former Arsenal hero Charlie Nicholas has warned boss Mikel Arteta that Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka are weak defensively.
The ex-Gunners favourite made the claim during an interview with Sky Sports – as per the Daily Star.
Ceballos is on loan from Real Madrid, whilst Xhaka has earned rave reviews since the restart.
Despite both players performing excellently for the Gunners since the restart, Nicholas isn’t allowing himself to get too carried away.
He told Sky Sports – as per the Daily Star: “Arsenal have formed a bit of momentum. It is still not right at the back but it’s better.
“Dani Ceballos is unpredictable. He has lovely ability and energy, but he and Granit Xhaka are weak defensively.
“That is the reason why have a back five. They are not holding as they cannot tackle but they can get on the ball.”
Arsenal are currently seventh in the table and face a fight to win a European place for next season.
The Gunners have improved under Arteta though and with that in mind, the signs do look good for the future.
Nicholas’ critique of Ceballos is particularly odd as his play since the restart has been mightily impressive.
Arsenal fans are desperately keen for the club to sign him on a permanent basis, feeling he’d be a great permanent addition.
Should Ceballos sign for the club permanently it won’t be down to his defensive duties and it’s a bizarre claim for Nicholas to make.
Xhaka has proved since the restart that he can do a job for the Gunners and although they may sign some competition, he will probably remain part of Arteta’s plans next season.
Arsenal’s summer priority will surely lie at the back, with a centre-back sure to be on the boss’ list of transfer targets.
