Charlie Nicholas was not impressed at all with Arsenal record signing Nicolas Pepe in the 2-2 draw with Watford on Sunday afternoon.
As per Sky Sports, Nicholas was keen to point out that it wasn’t just the defenders who underperformed at Vicarage Road, as he laid into Pepe as well.
He said: “Nicolas Pepe was dreadful against Watford. How Emery took Mesut Ozil and Dani Ceballos off ahead of him was beyond me.
“It is starting to effect Ainsley Maitland-Niles and some of the other young players. Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock came on and could not keep the ball. It is the manager’s responsibility. He must resolve this and come to a conclusion on how to sort this out.”
TBR’s View – Pepe struggling to show his quality but diamond formation isn’t helping either
Nicholas’ criticism may perhaps be a touch over the top but there’s little doubt that Pepe has not shown the quality which got the Arsenal fans so excited this summer.
The front three was meant to be the catalyst for an exciting season, but they have only played together once, with Unai Emery playing Pepe as a striker in a diamond twice away from home so far.
That can’t be helping the Ivorian but he also needs to take it on himself to elevate himself above the level of the defence, just like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
