Aston Villa have made a largely positive start to the new Premier League campaign. Having been promoted from the Championship last time around, Dean Smith’s side look to have settled in and adapted to life back in the top flight quickly.

The Villans registered their first win of the league campaign with a 2-0 triumph over Everton last Friday. New striker Wesley opened his account at Villa Park and sent his side on their way to their first three points of the season.

Even though they lost their first two games, Villa still competed well, especially in the middle of the park. The likes of Jack Grealish, John McGinn and Douglas Luiz have all shown flashes of their quality.

Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas, writing in his regular Premier League predictions column, has given his verdict on Aston Villa’s midfield contingent. He said, “Douglas Luiz, John McGinn and Jack Grealish can pull the strings. McGinn doesn’t need to hold as he has an abundance of energy. Luiz is technically decent, but I would want him to adjust to the English way and understand how his fellow midfielders play. Grealish needs to play higher up the pitch”.

TBR’s view

Aston Villa’s midfielders certainly deserve plenty of credit. McGinn, especially, has taken to the Premier League exceptionally well. The 24-year-old Scot had already registered a goal and an assist this season.

However, Nicholas is right to suggest that there is more to come from this trio. Grealish’s talent is no secret, but he is yet to produce his best this season. In a more attacking role, it is easy to see how he might flourish.

Luiz has also demonstrated a few lapses in concentration. He needs to cut those errors out quickly, or else he risks making the tough season already facing Villa even more challenging.
