Charlie Nicholas doesn’t want Granit Xhaka recalled for Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool

The Sky pundit says he’s dreading his former club’s visit to Anfield.

Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas is not feeling optimistic about his former club Arsenal’s visit to Anfield to face Liverpool on Saturday.

He said he is ‘dreading’ the game and doesn’t want 26-year-old Granit Xhaka to return to the squad for the crunch clash.

As per his Sky Sports column, he said: “I’m dreading this game. How are they going to defend against Liverpool?David Luiz could make mistakes or he could have a man-of-the-match performance. Sokratis doesn’t offer enough and they are still vulnerable in the full-back areas.

“Arsenal should play with two protectors in front. I don’t want Granit Xhaka in the team, I would prefer Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi. They would give Arsenal energy and defensive qualities.”

TBR’s View – Xhaka’s lack of discipline has been an issue throughout his Arsenal career

A holding midfielder who has been at Arsenal for a number of years and is considered one of the captains of the team like Xhaka is should not be considered a liability for a big away game.

The fact that’s the case reflects the issues with Xhaka. Getting him back from injury should be a boost but Nicholas doesn’t even think he should be in the side, with a youngster like Guendouzi preferred.

Whatever Emery does, he needs to put out a more robust unit which can withstand the barrages Liverpool famously produce and provide a platform for his new front three to cause problems.
