Change of style sees Theo Walcott proving Everton doubters wrong

When Everton snapped up Theo Walcott in January it was a deal that was met with mixed reviews. Some fans felt that the Sam Allardyce signing was not what Everton needed.

Walcott had lost his pace, the former England star had no end product, injuries had got the better of the former wonderkid. Those were the criticisms aimed at the signing.

Walcott did little in his first few months after the £20 million move to Goodison Park to suggest the doubters were wrong.

However, he has started the new season with an absolute bang. The 29-year-old has looked renewed with confidence and against Bournemouth yesterday was in particularly exceptional form.

Walcott scored and was the man hauled down by Adam Smith for the Cherries full-back’s red card. Both goals came because of what many felt Walcott had lost, his pace.

He streamed past the Bournemouth defence at lightning speed.

At Arsenal, his pace was rarely utilised. The Gunners rarely play balls into the channels or probe behind defensive lines. The club’s passing style under Arsene Wenger, in fact, hindered Walcott’s best ability.

Against Bournemouth he was electric and Everton fans are starting to be won over by the former England international.

With Cenk Tosun the perfect foil and Richarlison looking in the goals, Everton could have a frightening front three for the remainder of the season. If Walcott keeps up such form, Everton fans might just raise a small glass to Big Sam.
