Some Newcastle United fans felt that the exit of Chancel Mbemba was harsh on the DR Congo centre-back last summer. But if his FC Porto spell is anything to go by, they were wrong.
The 24-year-old left Newcastle last summer after managing just 11 appearances for Rafa Benitez’s side in 2017-18. Many felt that was a harsh return, given Mbemba’s pace at the back and aerial prowess.
BBC Sport claim he left Newcastle for just over £7million. A decent return for Newcastle given his disappointing 2017-18 campaign. Fast forward until now, and he has been a complete waste of money.

This season, Mbemba has managed six appearances throughout the entire campaign. Foot RDC claim Mbemba is currently training with the reserves at Porto, describing his spell at the Portuguese club as a “nightmare”.
Though Porto are in the Champions League quarter finals and take on Liverpool, it seems as though Mbemba will be nowhere near the squad. A move this summer looks inevitable.
It is a shame for a player Newcastle signed back in the summer of 2015 from RSC Anderlecht with bags of potential. He has failed to live up to that despite earning 45 caps for DR Congo.
Did he deserve a bigger chance at Newcastle? Perhaps, but his form for Porto suggests different.
