Champions League-winner manager could end up replacing Howe at Newcastle

There has been a bubbling of pressure on Eddie Howe at Newcastle United in recent weeks and it was never going to be long before Jose Mourinho’s name came up.

Howe has done a remarkable job with the Magpies, guiding them to the Champions League last season and keeping them competitive this season under a barrage of injury problems.

However, recent results have been inconsistent and there’s been a small sense that there is a tiny amount of pressure beginning to build.

And according to Italian publication Corriere Giallo Rosso, former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is seen as someone PIF would move for to replace Howe.

While there is no direct mention of Howe losing his job, the report from CGR suggests that PIF see Mourinho as a really big coup for their sporting projects.

Mourinho, now 60, has apparently already been offered terms by clubs in Saudi Arabia but PIF are thought to be keeping him on their list in case it goes pear-shaped at St James’ Park.

Lauded as an ‘incredible‘ manager by John Terry, Mourinho continued his winning habit in the 21/22 season as he led Roma to the Europa Conference League title. In doing so, Mourinho became the first coach to win all three current European trophies available.

Newcastle, of course, have enjoyed a fine rise under the guidance of Eddie Howe and at the moment, there are no concrete signs he is going anywhere.

Mourinho’s style would also be under scrutiny from the Toon Army, who enjoy a brand of exciting football not often associated with the Portuguese.

However, Mourinho’s record of delivering trophies is second to none and PIF could well look at that, should they eventually decide time is up for Eddie Howe.
